4th ANZONA Conference 21st to 23rd October, 2009 at
the Stamford Grand Hotel, Glenelg SASAON News
SAON membership numbers are steadily rising with a noticeable surge following
our successful Trauma Across the Lifespan Workshop. Approximately 70 participants
attended with 20 percent or so from country areas. We were particularly pleased
to welcome Sandra from Victoria. There was good support from local trade.
Publicity Officer – Larissa Bailey distributed the July Newsletter at
the workshop.
Topics covered included: Demand Management in ED: Orthopaedic Conditions,
Nursing Management of Orthopaedic Injuries by an Emergency Nurse Practitioner,
Pelvic Trauma, Paediatric Trauma by an Orthopaedic NP, Spinal Trauma, Traumatic
Wounds: Combined Orthopaedic/Plastics Perspective, Nursing Approach to Traumatic
Wounds by Wound Management Nurse Practitioner, Trauma Associated with Sports
Injury, Traumatic Ankle Injuries, Psychological Impact of Trauma and The Occupational
Physician & Trauma.
Our newly appointed Membership Officer Liz McNeill ran our workshop evaluation
via ‘surveymonkey’. Evaluation suggested a good to great level
of satisfaction with the workshop overall. We also polled peoples’ reasons
for attending the workshop and where they found out about the workshop with
80% of participants wanting to increase knowledge and almost 50% learning
about the workshop through a poster. The large country contingent may be attributed
to communication via Department of Health email distribution lists.
A privileged few (!) attended the SAON Education meeting on 4th August sponsored
by Argosy Hire. Paul McLiesh presented his project on Country XRay Followup:
a strategy aimed at following up country patients via xrays taken in the country
area then sent to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and reviewed in a ‘virtual’
orthopaedic outpatient clinic. It was a cold wet night that kept the numbers
down however the Indian feast supplied by the sponsor soon warmed us up!

The Boardroom (Level 1)

Carpark entrance No 2, University of WA
Hackett Drive, CrawleyThe ONA/WA has been enjoying a busy but successful year
so far. The March AGM welcomed in a new committee with good representation
from several hospitals in both the public and private sectors and is lead
by the president Wendy Duperouzel. The AGM was followed by a Plastering Demonstration
by Sheryl Thyne from Royal Perth Hospital.
A “Simply Shoulders” study day was held on 26 March 2008 at
St John of God Subiaco. There were 91 attendees from both metropolitan and
country hospitals. Topics for the day included:
• Review of shoulder anatomy and physiology;
• Regional anaesthesia;
• Neurovascular assessment of upper limbs;
• Sports injuries;
• Brachial plexus injuries;
• Slings; and
• A live theatre link up to watch Peter Campbell (Orthopaedic Surgeon)
perform an Acromioplasty
The most popular session was Anaesthetist Dr Rob Storer’s discussion
of regional anaesthesia which was both very humorous and informative.
The attendees provided helpful suggestions on topics for future study days
which the committee will be working to implement.
We have held three study days over the last 12 months and the money raised
has been used to set up a fund for our members to apply to attend conferences
(eg. ANZONA Conference in Rotorua) and also to support study in Post Graduate
Clinical Programs in Orthopaedics.
In May we held an evening education session on “Tales from the State
Major Trauma Unit” presented by Sheryl Jonescu, Trauma Case Manager,
Royal Perth Hospital. Our evening education sessions are held four times a
year.
On 22nd and 23rd August 2008 we are holding our 5th State Orthopaedic Conference

Annual Scientific Meeting. The highlights will include a session on “The

Q.O.N.S.I.G. held a 2 day conference on the Gold Coast, Queensland in March
titled Fractured Progressive Orthopaedic Practice (P.O.P.) with delegate numbers
over 100.
Q.O.N.S.I.G. committee continues to provide education sessions in the form
of a half day workshop. The last workshop was held in March and the next is
scheduled for July. Each committee member organises and runs the workshop
and is held where that committee member works. These workshops are sponsored
by that hospital providing morning tea and or lunch. Guest speakers include
doctors, allied health and nurses. These workshops provide ongoing networking
between all staff and committee members, which allows us to provide specific
educational needs to our members.

Workshop 26th July 2008. Click here for flyer
NZONA have been very busy over the past few months. Our membership numbers are steadily growing with a motivated group of South Islanders drumming up support. The South Island Regional Group has held its first planning meeting and arranging to have their first education meeting in October.
Our regular Northern Regional education meetings continue with the most recent held in Auckland on the 26th of July. This Spinal Seminar included revision of the anatomy and physiology of the spine, an over view of spinal injury treatment, the management of the spinal patient from the emergency room to the ward and a practical session. As usual the seminar was follow by a NZONA meeting with the members from the South Island flying up to attend.The education part of the day was great it was however a huge challenge to get there with weather warnings, gale force winds and flooding for the most part of the North Island. So we all were focused on just getting home that day and were not able to have our usual lunch catch up.
Currently the Constitution is being updated, the changes will be circulated
soon for consultation with the aim to have this finalised at the November
AGM, which will follow the education morning that is planned for the 29th
of November in Rotorua. The topic for the morning is metabolic bone disorders
and will cover things like oesteoporosis, pagets, gout, hyper and hypo parathyroidism.
All welcome check out our web page for details www.nzona.org.The bi-monthly
news letter that is produced by our Promotions Officer Lynley Papadopoulas
is also available from this web page.
