South Australian Orthopaedic Nurses Association (SAON)

SAON News

The SAON committee is in full swing conference planning. However in our spare time (!) there has been the February AGM 2009 with some most welcome inclusions to the committee. Orthopaedic Consultant Graham Mercer spoke about the ADAM initiative in SA and his personal experience of service redesign for joint arthroplasty patients in his health unit. He also provided information on the National Joint Registry.

The last SAON Education Meeting on Tuesday May 12 saw us combining with The Orthopaedic Special Interest Group to hear Orthopaedic Surgeon Pete Stavrou speak on Ankle Conditions. Thanks go to Advanced Surgical for sponsoring the evening and providing refreshments.

Pete covered a number of ankle conditions including: hallux valgus, hallux rigidus, peroneal tendonitis, tibialis posterior deficiency, ankle instability, ankle arthritis and ankle fusion. Common to most conditions is a lengthy post-operative period. Most conditions required a period in a post-operative shoe/plaster/boot accompanied by a period of modified weight bearing. A full recovery can be expected anywhere between 6 to 12 months!

A company representative also spoke on the technique of Lars Ligament Reconstruction.

Orthopaedic Nurses Association of Western Australia (ONA/WA)

All meetings held on the second Tuesday of the month at 5pm. Venue:
The Boardroom (Level 1)
Clinical Training Education Centre
Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
Carpark entrance No 2, University of WA
Hackett Drive, CrawleyThe ONA/WA has been enjoying a busy but successful year so far. The March AGM welcomed in a new committee with good representation from several hospitals in both the public and private sectors and is lead by the president Wendy Duperouzel. The AGM was followed by a Plastering Demonstration by Sheryl Thyne from Royal Perth Hospital.

A “Simply Shoulders” study day was held on 26 March 2008 at St John of God Subiaco. There were 91 attendees from both metropolitan and country hospitals. Topics for the day included:
• Review of shoulder anatomy and physiology;
• Regional anaesthesia;
• Neurovascular assessment of upper limbs;
• Sports injuries;
• Brachial plexus injuries;
• Slings; and
• A live theatre link up to watch Peter Campbell (Orthopaedic Surgeon) perform an Acromioplasty
The most popular session was Anaesthetist Dr Rob Storer’s discussion of regional anaesthesia which was both very humorous and informative.
The attendees provided helpful suggestions on topics for future study days which the committee will be working to implement.
We have held three study days over the last 12 months and the money raised has been used to set up a fund for our members to apply to attend conferences (eg. ANZONA Conference in Rotorua) and also to support study in Post Graduate Clinical Programs in Orthopaedics.
In May we held an evening education session on “Tales from the State Major Trauma Unit” presented by Sheryl Jonescu, Trauma Case Manager, Royal Perth Hospital. Our evening education sessions are held four times a year.
On 22nd and 23rd August 2008 we are holding our 5th State Orthopaedic Conference – “Articulate Align, Unite – Taking Orthopaedics into the Future”. Our conference will be held in conjunction with the AOA/WA’s Annual Scientific Meeting. The highlights will include a session on “The Orthopaedic Patient in 10 and 20 Years Time” presented by Gavin Clark, Orthopaedic Consultant, and “Development In Emergency Medicine” by Terry Jongen, Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner.

Queensland Orthopaedic Nurses

Queensland Orthopaedic Nurses Interest Group News

We have achieved an increase in numbers attending education sessions since holding them in the evenings instead of Saturday mornings, this increase has been from 15 to 50 attendees. Involving reps for sponsorship has proven valuable as they are approaching unit managers in their areas.

We held a day workshop in May which included a plastering session either application of a back slab or a full casts, everyone had fun as each attendee had the opportunity to apply a cast.
We had a theme for hip problems and how they were managed this included a Thomas Splint session and application of this to one of the attendees. This was followed by a presentation by one of the orthopaedic surgeons and included perioperative equipment with one of the orthopaedic perioperative nurses assisting, this generated many questions and discussion as everyone was able to see the equipment as the trays were set up for all to see

Since QONSIG has purchased a specific computer we have gone green and have managed to limit the number of mail outs dramatically as the members now receive correspondence electronically.

New Zealand Orthopaedic Nurses

Summary from New Zealand Orthopaedic Nurses Association (NZONA).

In New Zealand, education sessions are continuing and being well received. The Northern region held one, hosted in Auckland, in September. The focus was paediatrics with topics such as Botox use, cerebral palsy and child protection being covered. All sessions were very interesting and informative, especially as many of us work mostly with adults. It is important to realise that many of the issues encountered in childhood can cause problems later in life. There is one more session planned for in Rotorua in November.
At this time we are thinking of our nursing colleagues in Samoa who have been working long hours to deal with the aftermath of the tsunami and for those working here in New Zealand that quite possibly have lost family or know of people who have.
International Orthopaedic Nurses Day is nearly here and we are looking at ways we can celebrate our contribution to nursing.
We are currently setting up an education committee to look at information we can make available and endorse as an organisation. Some of the topics that have been suggested are cast care and pin site care.
